CatLABS X Film 80 - A Versatile Film for Box Cameras

Right, having been absent from the blog for a while I have returned armed with a lot of new film to put through the box cameras.

I wanted to try and learn a new skill, so I'm going to experiment with pushing and pulling film to see if I can get away with shooting one single film type in different light conditions. It's a sort of retrospective approach to toggling your ISO. Make a note of the EV, shoot the camera, and then decide which film speed would have been best suited to those conditions. Develop accordingly.

While it sounds pretty straightforward I have never pushed or pulled film in development before, so I'm not expecting everything to be plain sailing. It's just a bit of fun with box cameras.

The film I have chosen for this experiment is Catlabs X Film 80. This is a nice looking black and white film that has a wide exposure latitude and for development can be rated anywhere from ISO 50 to 800.

When this film was launched there was a lot of speculation that it was just rebranded Shanghai GP3 film. Catlabs, however, stated that the Shanghai backing paper and tape were used to keep costs down, but confirmed that the emulsion was new. So there, a nice new film to try out on some 1940s cameras.

CatLABS X80 can be shot at ISO 50-800. This means, when shooting Ensign Ful-Vue cameras:

Shoot ISO 50 for EV 13 (subjects in cloudy bright light)
Shoot ISO 80-100 for EV 12 (heavily overcast)
Shoot ISO 200 for EV 11 (subjects in shade/very cloudy day)
Shoot ISO 400 for EV 10 (landscapes during sunset)
Shoot ISO 800 for EV 9 (landscapes after sunset)
First results soon!
